Clement Smith, the protagonist, is a worker at the Ministry of Truth who secretly hates Meinrecht. Big Brother, the Supreme Leader of Europa, enjoys an intense cult of personality, manufactured by Meinrecht's excessive brainwashing techniques and use of propaganda. Great Britain, officially refered to as Grundlage 1, has become a province of the Europa superpower ruled by Meinrecht, who use the Thought Police to suppress all independent thinking. ![]() ![]() The story is set in an imagined 1984, where the world is in constant warfare and totalitarian governnments. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated. Thematically, it centres on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance and repressive regimentation of people and behaviours within society. The novel was a major criticism of Stalinist Russia (just like Orwell's previous book Animal Farm), French Marxism (particularly that of the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, whose "existence precedes essence" is directly mentioned in the novel) as well as Francoist Spain. Nineteen Eighty-Four (also stylised as 1984) is a 1949 dystopian social science fiction novel and cautionary tale written by the English writer George Orwell.
